Support Personnel Health Examinations/Communicable Diseases

Descriptor Code: 5.450 Issue Date: November 8, 1999
Rescinds: GCRA Revised Date: July 28, 2008

Robertson County School Board Policy

The Director of Schools shall reassign or suspend any employee suspected of having a communicable disease which might endanger the health of others, only to the extent necessary to minimize the risk of transmitting the disease.

The Board shall require any employee to submit to a physical examination by a physician whenever there is reason to believe that the employee has any communicable disease.

To assist the Board in making final disposition of the case, the Director of Schools may refer the case to the County Department of Health or other medical experts. The Board will then consider the written report when determining the employment status of the employee.

The Director of School Health Services may request that further examinations be conducted by a physician or County Health Department and may request periodic re-examinations after the employee has returned to work.

Pre-employment physical examinations may be required after an offer of employment has been extended, but before employment begins. Results of the physical examination may condition the offer of employment. Employment may be withdrawn as a result of the examination.

A drug test is not a medical examination and can be given before an offer of employment is made.

Physical examinations (fitness for duty exams) can be given to current employees if there is a business necessity to determine whether an employee is still able to perform the essential functions of his/her job and if the physical examination is job related.

Physical examination will be treated as confidential medical records and kept in a separate medical file.
