Robertson County School Board Policy

Schools may offer a course in Pre-Algebra at the seventh grade level and courses in Pre-Algebra and/or Algebra I and/or English I at the eighth grade level for students who meet the minimum criteria for eligibility as described below.

  1. For Pre-Algebra or Algebra I, the student must have scored in the 80%-tile or greater on the math portion of the TCAP test the previous year, and have earned a "B" or above in mathematics the previous year. For Advanced English, student must have scored in the 80%-tile or greater on the  language portion of the TCAP, and have earned a B or above in English during the seventh grade year.
  2. The student may be placed in the class by a multi-disciplinary team if the team feels the student's performance scores do not reflect his/her true ability.

Should the student meet all requirements except the mastery of strands on the TCAP, a criterion-referenced test may be given to determine the student's achievement.

A student who has completed a Pre-Algebra, an Algebra I, or an English I course below the ninth grade level will be given the appropriate end-of-course exam as mandated by the State. Students who earn a performance level of "Advanced" will be given credit for having successfully completed that course, and, where appropriate awarded with one credit toward graduation. Upon promotion to the ninth grade, a "P" indicating the course had been passed will be entered on the cumulative record. The course will not be considered in the student's high school grade point average. Students may receive only one unit of credit in mathematics prior to high school and/or one credit in English.

Students who do not obtain the minimum passing score on the test may retake the examination. Such students may enroll in the course during the summer session for remediation but must pass the test for credit.

Students may not earn Advanced credit at the pre-high school level.
